“Raven” by Ingrid Fu

After reading Edgar Allan Poe's Poem "The Raven," the figure of the raven triggered my poetic inspiration. So I created this poem, as well as a Chinese poem and a song on the same topic.

Through this poem, I want to express the confusion, rebellion, and pursuit of our generation of young people.

I happen to be in a band called RAVEN. I feel that we are like the birds seeking freedom in the poem, like dark but shining stars, looking for belonging, and guiding each other.

“Raven"

by Ingrid Fu

When the darkness tears up my dream into tears

The wind bell used to ring but I no longer hear

The starry sky that envelops the roof no longer shines

The dim haze flows by and the moon was obscured

Those timeworn lamps started strobing near

I walked toward the edge, after recalling those years

I used to be scared but now no longer fear

I got nothing to lose, its nightmare

I used up all I had

but was returned with a laugh

my persistence seemed

trivial and like ash

I always knew the ending,

was never going to be blooming

Then why should I start this tale,

and make myself fading

how much paid and how much deserved

how much I get and how much I regret

Why striving still in the end broken

Diligent yet in this hopeless position

Some raven flew by crying out sorrow

They comprehend what I was thinking their feeling I know

We all been crushed by our life and had been put so low

No matter how they tried, still driven to the shadow

They had no other choice other than admit their destiny

They say we’re forever worthless and does not match with glory

That we don’t deserve a beautiful memory

Once we thought to end this helpless painful journey

The tragedy comes true and we had no option

I do want to go back live peacefully with passion

But everything is already mistaken,

and this is the ending we had chosen

I ended up on this top,

to the night sky, we starred

Closed my eyes and leaped into the air

I swirled and twirled,

the wind dancing up my feather

I flew and soared away,

I’m free now and I can go anywhere

And I hope that we can go further.

To a place away from here

When you see a black star in the sky

It's black but bright

A dark ugly bird, In a husky voice

wailing out that song, Of Raven.
