First Snow, 2022!
By Edward Yumin Oh (11L)
When it snows, most people around the world usually think of December or January. But that’s certainly not the case in Beijing; in the middle of November, way before ‘actual’ winter, it snowed! Starting from last Saturday night and snowing all the way up to Sunday morning, Beijing saw one of its biggest snowfalls in the past few years, receiving up to 20 centimeters of snow!
Of course, when it snows, the MSHS Football field and the courtyard becomes the favorite place for students to throw snowballs and make snowmen. Whether middle schoolers or IB students, several Grade 11 students took their Period 1 free period to go outside in their parkas and play in the snow before anyone else.
The temperature change was considerable. As you could have noticed, there were a lot more students and teachers walking around in their jackets than last week. After all, this weekend was sure to be the coldest weekend this month. The temperature fell from 13°C on Saturday morning (before snowing), to 0°C on Sunday morning. Even though the extreme cold may not be good news for us, it is good news for the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics!
This temperature change was also significant in other areas. Shenyang saw the lowest recorded temperature in the city, breaking a record made in 1910— breaking a record made a century ago.
We interviewed Cheryll and Alina from Grade 7 while they were engaged in a snowball fight in the MSHS football field who said that they were “greatly enjoying the snow” that they have not seen while they were at school since 2020.
However, temperatures are expected to rise again since it stopped snowing yesterday. By next week, temperatures should be back up at 10°C. Be sure to wear something warm to and fro school, and watch out for slippery roads or ice if you walk/bike to school!
