How the World Was Created

2023 BIBA Short Story Competition Silver Winner Tiffany Zheng

In the beginning, everything was dark. The universe was a whirlpool of shadows, magic, and mist. From the turmoil came a great ball of swirling light that drove the darkness away, then the ball split into two halves, the brightest half became the ever-blue sky, and the darkest half became the fertile ground. What was left of the ball of light became the sun, moon, and stars.

Now that the world was created, however, something was still empty. The newly-created world was lifeless and devastated, dust blocked the once-blue sky, and deserts covered the once-fertile ground. All of a sudden, two gods emerged from the dust and deserts. They were Astralyssus, god of the sky, and Vinicia, goddess of the earth. The presence of Astralyssus and Vinicia scared the dust and deserts away, as a result, the world returned to its original and peaceful form.

Then, Astralyssus and Vinicia married and had seven magnificent children: Solaria, goddess of the sun, gleaming with golden armor; Lunarus, god of the moon, shining in his silver robe; Driftianus, god of the rivers, with fish swirling all around him; Frostica, goddess of the snow, with snowflakes floating around her; Leafitica, goddess of the forests, wearing a primitive tunic of leaves; Stormis, god of the storms, glaring with stormy anger; and finally...Vitis, goddess of life, who gave the joy and happiness to this empty world.

Astralyssus and Vinicia was content of their creation. But one thing missed were creatures. They requested Vitis to create something new. Vitis, Creator of Life, made all the animals out of clay, then enchanted them to become alive. Lastly, she created a strange animal. Unlike other animals, it had no claws and no sharp teeth, no scales and no fur. Instead, it had wisdom-something that was different from the other animals. This strange animal was the human being. Vitis split all animals into male and female, so they can mate and give birth to the same animals. Therefore, she did not need to create more animals.

The world, filled with life and happiness, was absolutely perfect. There were no wars, no fighting, and no death. But the perfectness ended when Solaria and Lunarus were fighting over who was the brightest. Driftianus, the river god, sided up with Lunarus, because he knew Lunarus would lose against Solaria, and he wanted to prevent Lunarus from losing. Of course, Solaria, as the sun, won over Lunarus, the moon. From now on, Solaria’s sun would be the brightest object in the universe, and the moon would only be the second brightest. Lunarus and Driftianus were so sad that they cried a thousand tears on the newly-created world. Their tears filled up more than a half of this world, and that became the ocean.

To stop the dispute from getting worse, Astralyssus banished Solaria to the sun and Lunarus to the moon forever. But even if Lunarus and Driftianus, the best of friends, were separated, they still reached for each other. That is why every night, the water will rise towards the moon.

With the world now peaceful again, the gods decided to watch over the humans to prevent them from disturbing the peace again. And this is how the world became what it is today.
