Visit to the IBDP Y1 Theatre Class
By Andy Yoontec Oh, G11F
MARCH 15th: While Theatre is not a well-known IB subject amongst all others, four 11th graders showed passion for acting, and are currently taking the IB Theatre class. On March 7th, BIBA press team got a chance to take a sneak peek at our first-ever IB Theatre class, taught by Mr. Darshan Naik.
As the students come in to the Drama room, they gathered to the stage like a routine. With the help of the Theatre teacher, Mr. Naik, students started to warm up with different practice routines. As Mr. Naik gave instructions that triggered their imagination, the students started expressing their imagination with their body and facial expressions. “Warming up is pretty crucial because it helps us to express our emotions with ease during the whole class.” says River Li, a Grade 11 DP Theatre class student.
Hamlet, Act 1
After the warm up, the class began with a small discussion on their current course (play), Hamlet by William Shakespeare. At the time of visiting, the class was working on Scene 1 of Hamlet where ghosts appear as the main characters. While the ghosts have no dialogue, there are many imageries and interactions by ghosts that are important for future plots and scenes. From playing different types of ghosts to showing the contrast between western and eastern ghosts, the fierce participation of our four students showed the great passion towards Theatre class.
Although I was able to stay in the 2nd floor drama room and see their class performance for only one period, it was clear to me that Theatre class in BIBA is surely an enthusiastic and interactive subject with different acting workshops that help students develop into better and braver actors and actresses. “Learning is very fun here,” Addie Yu, a Grade 11 theatre student said to me during my visit, “I like how Theatre class is unlike other normal classes, we can stand anywhere in the classroom and move freely while we listen to the lecture.” says Addie.
