Chinese New Year @ BIBA

WEDNESDAY FEB 19th— As always, BIBA celebrated Chinese New Year with fiery performances in a festive atmosphere. Like before, BIBA’s CNY events were scheduled on Thursday February 20th with the CNY special assembly scheduled in the morning and the annual temple fair (庙会) scheduled in the afternoon. Unfortunately, due to recent COVID-19 cases in the Beijing area, the day of the celebration was pushed a day forward to Wednesday the 19th and the temple fair—an annual event where Chinese classes sold food & snacks and offered games—was completely cancelled. Instead, the MSHS CNY performances were combined with the ES performances that took place Wednesday after school.

Of course, this could have been disappointing news to all the students who prepared food and drinks to sell in the temple fair. The same goes for students who were scheduled to perform on Thursday morning; although some performances performed on Wednesday, a large number of performances didn’t get to perform. These include a comedy skit, Pipa and Yangqin performances, a rendition of 《月空中最亮的心》 and a short teaser of the Mulan production scheduled for later this year. Despite this, it would have been obvious to all who have seen the performances that all performers performed very well and gave wonderful performances. After all, many of them have been rehearsing weeks before the day of the concert.

Like always, a lot of our students across middle school, high school, elementary school, kindergarten, and ECC put in their efforts in bringing up the festive ‘New Year spirit’ in celebrating one of the most prominent Chinese holidays. Starting Thursday, BIBA will be off on holidays for the next FOUR weeks till Monday, February 21st. As always, keep safe if you’re traveling out of Beijing and most importantly, have a happy new year with family and friends!
